Silver Pass Public Art Project

For the thousands who pass through this structure on Georgia Avenue each day - on foot, on bicycle, in a car or bus - there is only one gateway to and from Montgomery County, and this is it!

The Silver Pass Public Art Project was proposed by Theresa Cameron, former Executive Director of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, back in 2003. Three years and roughly $80,000 later, the transformation of the frequently vandalised, uninviting pedestrian lanes through the structure was begun. Twenty-five Montgomery County teens from all walks of life pooled their creative energy and talents, and under the direction of lead artists Byron Peck and Carien Quiroga, created a dynamic paint and mosaic mural assemblage representing major transportation modes that helped build and sustain Silver Spring (car, train, trolley and Metrorail).  Major contributors to the project included Montgomery County (MD), The JBG Companies, the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families, and the Carl M. Freeman Foundation.

Thanks to the contributions of the Silver Spring Regional Center (SSRC) and contributors to the Community Investment Tax Credit Program (CITC), a second "overpass" phase of the project was completed under the direction of artists Byron Peck and Carien Quiroga, and was installed in the fall of 2008.  In addition to SSRC and CITC, AOB would like to especially thank The Tower Companies, Chevy Chase BioPartners, Atlantic Services Group, J. H. M. Research and Development, and Wolpoff Properties for their generous contributions to this effort!
